As you can see at the bottom right, the October Harper’s includes an essay by William Gass on George Orwell’s diaries. It’s called “Double Vision: George Orwell’s contradictions” (subscription only). Favorite Gass line, which follows a quoted bit: “This conclusion has a lot of rhetorical steam, but it does not whistle with the truth.”
